Sandeep Bakhshi Gets Two More Years to Extend ICICI Bank's Turnaround
The RBI cleared his reappointment through October 2028, extending a tenure that turned a scandal-hit lender into India's second-largest private bank by market value
In May 2026, the Reserve Bank of India formally approved the reappointment of Sandeep Bakhshi as Managing Director and CEO of ICICI Bank for a further two-year term, running from October 4, 2026 to October 3, 2028. The extension follows unanimous approval from ICICI Bank's own board back in January, with shareholder consent still to be sought as the final procedural step. It's Bakhshi's fourth term at the helm since he first took over in October 2018 — a tenure now on track to run a full decade.
The Bank He Inherited
Bakhshi's appointment in 2018 came at one of the most difficult moments in ICICI Bank's modern history. He took over from Chanda Kochhar, whose exit followed a governance scandal, at a bank then dealing with high non-performing assets, low profitability ratios and damaged employee morale. Bakhshi, a three-decade veteran of the broader ICICI Group who had previously run ICICI Prudential Life Insurance and ICICI Lombard General Insurance, moved quickly: introducing a "One Bank, One ROE" policy that prioritised profitability over pure growth or market share, simplifying the bank's product structure, decentralising management, and scaling back the large-corporate lending group that had been a source of many of the bank's earlier problems.
The Numbers That Justified the Extension
The turnaround has been substantial by most standard banking metrics. ICICI Bank's net margin climbed from around 3 percent to roughly 17 percent within a few years of Bakhshi taking charge, with double-digit growth sustained in both interest and fee income through multiple cycles. The bank's most recent quarterly results, reported ahead of the reappointment, showed standalone net profit of ₹13,702 crore for the quarter ended March 2026, up from ₹12,630 crore in the same period a year earlier — continued earnings momentum even as an earlier quarter's profit came in below analyst expectations due to higher provisions.
A Philosophy Built Around Restraint, Not Just Growth
What distinguishes Bakhshi's public commentary from many bank CEOs is his repeated emphasis on prudence over pace. In the bank's FY24 annual report, he described ICICI Bank's priority as growing in a "prudent and responsible manner," anchored around the principles of "One Bank, One Team," "Fair to Customer, Fair to Bank," and "Return of Capital" — a framing that treats disciplined, balanced growth as the actual strategic objective, not merely a constraint on a faster-growth alternative. He has paired that discipline with continued investment in digital banking capability, describing the bank's goal as simplifying banking and delivering a superior experience across all customer segments and micro-markets, anchored in trust, integrity and transparency.
Why Continuity Matters Here Specifically
Market participants have generally read Bakhshi's reappointment as a clear positive, particularly given how much of ICICI Bank's post-2018 recovery has been tied to the specific discipline and risk culture he introduced rather than to any single product or market cycle. For a bank managing the transition out of a scandal-driven leadership crisis, extending the tenure of the executive who rebuilt its credibility carries a different kind of weight than a routine reappointment would at a company with a less fraught recent history.
Why It Matters for Market Leaders
Bakhshi's near-decade at ICICI Bank offers a useful counterpoint to founder-led market-leader narratives: a professional banker brought in specifically to restore institutional discipline, whose extended tenure has been earned quarter by quarter through sustained, unglamorous execution rather than a single transformative bet. For a market leader recovering from a governance crisis, that kind of patient, metrics-driven continuity may be exactly the leadership profile the moment calls for.
