AstroTalk Became a $1 Billion Company Without Raising a Single New Dollar
An astrologer once told founder Puneet Gupta his startup would fail. It did. That prediction became the seed for a company now valued at $1 billion
On August 12, 2026, AstroTalk announced it had reached unicorn status at a $1 billion valuation — but not through the funding round most Indian startups use to cross that threshold. Instead, the Noida-based astrology and spiritual-tech platform got there through an ESOP buyback, funded entirely from its own profits, that gave more than 100 employees the chance to sell part of their vested stock while still holding equity in the company's future.
A Founding Story That Sounds Like the Product Itself
AstroTalk's origin is unusually on-brand for what it sells. Founder Puneet Gupta, a Punjab Engineering College graduate who began his career as an analyst at Nomura and BNP Paribas, first tried entrepreneurship with an IT services startup called CodeYeti in 2015. Two years before CodeYeti eventually shut down in 2017, an astrologer had told Gupta the venture would fail within two years — a prediction he dismissed at the time. When it happened almost exactly as described, Gupta has said the moment shook his rational instincts enough to make him take astrology seriously. That personal experience became the seed for AstroTalk, which he founded in 2017 with co-founder Anmol Jain, previously Director of Product Management at INDmoney.
From a Simple Idea to a Broader Spiritual Commerce Platform
AstroTalk's original pitch was straightforward: take India's largely offline, unorganised astrology market and move it onto a digital platform, connecting users with verified astrologers over chat, call and video for horoscope readings, birth-chart analysis, tarot, numerology and Vastu consultations. The company has since expanded well beyond consultations into AstroTalk Store, a spiritual commerce arm selling gemstones, rudrakshas, bracelets and related products, which generated more than ₹140 crore in revenue in 2025 alone across over 1.6 million orders.
The Numbers Behind the Unicorn Milestone
AstroTalk's climb has been steep and recent: from a $300 million valuation in June 2024 to $1 billion just over two years later. The company reported ₹1,176 crore in revenue from operations in FY25, up from ₹651 crore the year before, with profit before tax rising to ₹285 crore from ₹127 crore. Its current annualised revenue run rate has crossed ₹2,500 crore. Notably, an earlier attempt to raise a similarly sized round from hedge fund Hornbill Capital reportedly fell through in late 2025 over investor discomfort with adult content on the platform during due diligence — making the profit-funded ESOP route to unicorn status look, in hindsight, like the steadier path.
Part of a Broader 2026 Wave
AstroTalk becomes the eighth Indian startup to reach unicorn status in 2026, following Juspay, Neysa, KreditBee, Skyroot Aerospace, Square Yards, Sarvam AI and Emergent — a reminder that India's unicorn creation, while slower than its 2021 peak, hasn't stalled, and increasingly spans categories far outside the fintech and e-commerce names that dominated the last cycle.
Why It Matters for Startup Spotlight
AstroTalk's path to $1 billion is a useful counterpoint to the assumption that unicorn status requires marquee venture capital. Gupta and Jain built a profitable business in a category most institutional investors overlooked, and used that profitability — not a fresh primary round — to hit the milestone while directly rewarding the employees who built it. For founders in categories that don't fit a typical VC pitch deck, it's a reminder that profitability itself can be the fundraising strategy.
